3. FILTER CALCULATION /
SIZING
Differential pressure across breather
lter
The differential pressure in the clean
condition is shown in the graph below.
3.1 SIZING GUIDELINES
The rate at which contamination and
humidity enters a hydraulic system
can be considerably reduced by using
efcient tank breather ltration.
CAUTION:
Incorrectly sized tank breather lters can
place additional strain on the system and
reduce the service life of hydraulic lter
elements.
For optimum sizing the following should
therefore be observed:
Filtration rating of breather lter ≤
ltration rating of hydraulic lter
Only use breather lters with an absolute
retention rate (d100 ≤ x µm;
x = given ltration rating)
Max. permitted initial pressure drop:
0.01 bar (with a clean lter element and
at calculated air ow)
Determining the calculated air ow:
Q
A
= f5 x Q
p
Q
A
= calculated air ow in l
N

f5 = factor for operating conditions
Q
p
= max. ow rate of the
hydraulic pump in l/min
Ambient conditions Factor f5
Low dust concentration;
lter tted with clogging indicator; 1-2
continuous monitoring of the lter
Average dust concentration;
lter without clogging indicator; 3-6
intermittent monitoring of the lter
High dust concentration;
lter without clogging indicator; 7-10
infrequent or no monitoring of the
lter
